Preventing Restraint in Aged Care
This Office has released a new draft policy on Guardian Consent for Restrictive Practice in Residential Aged Care Settings.
The policy is intended for use by Advocate/Guardians within our Office, however it may also be a useful reference for private guardians and substitute decision makers.
The policy seeks to ensure that aged care providers use a recognised tool to avoid restraint, such as the Commonwealth Government's Supporting a Restraint Free Environment Decision Making Tool. If concerns still exist a provider will be asked to request a specialist review from a geriatrician, psychogeriatrician or the Dementia Management Advisory Service.
